Verene A. Shepherd, graduate of the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the University of
Cambridge, is Professor Emerita of Social History at The UWI. She is Director of the Centre for
Reparation Research at the UWI, a published author of 7 books, a radio host and scholar activist,
especially in the areas of women’s rights, human rights and reparatory justice. She is the
immediate past Director of the Institute for Gender & Development Studies at The UWI. As a
UN expert she has played a role in helping to implement the UN International Year for People of
African descent and overseeing the drafting of the programme of activities for the UN
International Decade for people of African descent while she was Chair of the Working Group of
Experts on People of African Descent. Since 2016, she has been a member of the CERD. She is a
Honorary Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge.
